Launched in May 2020, Uniting’s Art while we’re apart competition emerged in response to the physical distancing restrictions brought on by COVID-19. Close to 500 artworks were entered by almost 250 Uniting residents and clients. Some were group entries, and many individuals entered multiple pieces.
In October 2020, all the artworks were displayed in an exhibition at Arjo Australia for limited COVID-safe physical viewing, as well as unlimited virtual viewing online.
Art while we’re apart was designed to keep Uniting aged care residents and clients connected and engaged during a period of increased isolation and vulnerability. The competition proved a wonderful tonic for the times and it sparked a flurry of creative activity across a range of artistic media, including painting and drawing, craft and textiles, photography and video, written and spoken word, innovation, and music.
